An incident on a gas pipeline in Pasvalys district has been localised

On Friday, January 13 an incident in the Pasvalys district in the northern part of Lithuania on gas pipeline of Amber Grid was localised. According to initial data, no people were injured in the incident. The gas ignited during the incident and stopped burning after about 4 hours.

The gas transmission system at the site of the incident consists of two parallel gas pipelines running towards Latvia. The incident occurred in one of them, while the other pipeline was not damaged. The gas supply to the damaged pipeline was immediately cut off and the fire burned until the gas in the pipeline section burned out.

Gas supply to Pasvalys district and other consumers in Northern Lithuania is ensured through a parallel pipeline. Gas supply to Latvia was also restored on the same evening.

According to Mr Nemunas Biknius, CEO of the gas transmission system operator Amber Grid, the section of the pipeline damaged in the incident is expected to be restored within a few days. "Law enforcement authorities and Amber Grid specialists are currently investigating the possible causes of the incident, and so far we have no information about any intentional damage to the pipeline infrastructure caused by third parties," commented N. Biknius.

The gas pipelines are potentially dangerous installations, therefore, we ask the residents to pay attention to the distinctive signs marking the gas pipeline route, not to carry out unplanned and ungranted works in the protection zone of the gas pipeline, and to protect themselves and their property.
